Understanding Unix Epoch Time, One Block at a Time

Unix epoch time counts the number of seconds that have elapsed since January 1, 1970 (UTC). This article introduces the concept while showcasing every block type our editor supports.

What is the Unix Epoch?

The epoch is a fixed starting point for time calculations. Systems store timestamps as integers relative to this baseline, simplifying math across languages and platforms.

Because the value is just a number, it is easy to serialize, compare, and sort. It also avoids localization issues until the final rendering step, when you convert it back into a human-readable time string.

Pro tip: milliseconds vs seconds

Some languages (like JavaScript) represent the epoch in milliseconds. Others (like Go or Python) default to seconds. Convert carefully when storing or comparing.
