Synchronized Media Metadata

OptiMist Team January 3, 2024 1 min read

Media is Not Just Audio and Video

Metadata is the umbrella term for non-audio and non-video data associated with a media asset. It can be timed (synchronized with the media) or untimed (describing the media).

While metadata is not strictly required, it can significantly enhance the overall media experience.

Examples of Metadata Tracks

Subtitles are a familiar example, but metadata can also include chapters, artwork, GPS locations, sensor outputs, or any additional context that helps interpret the content.

As capture and playback devices evolve, so does the type of metadata we can provide. Timed metadata lets you combine real-world data with the media stream for richer insight.

Security and weather cameras, sports coverage, and entertainment streams can all benefit from synchronized metadata describing who or what is on screen.

Challenges with Metadata Tracks

To add metadata effectively you need to ensure:

  • You can capture and attach the metadata to your media.

  • It stays in sync with the audio and video.

  • Your end users have a way to view or act on the metadata.

Integration work is usually required to match metadata with media, guarantee synchronization, and build features that expose it to viewers.

How MistServer Can Help

MistServer can ingest metadata alongside audio and video, transmux it to the outputs you need, and keep tracks synchronized.

The MistServer player communicates with the server so you can surface new metadata in playback, and our team can help tailor integrations to your workflow.

If you want to explore possibilities or need help getting more from your metadata, contact us, and let’s talk.
