From Multiviewer to Compositor

Balder Viëtor November 30, 2025 1 min read

When did the multiviewer become a compositor?

Some might still remember the multiviewer feature we were planning. At first it was already close to a compositor (a tool to add various various media elements into an unified endresult), however the main goal was to simply show multiple streams into one view.

This in itself was already a great addition to MistServer, however once you start using it and see the possibilities, it was hard for us to not add to it. I suppose in hindsight this feature was doomed to become much much more as it's simply too convenient and fun to play with.

We are planning to showcase & release the feature with FOSDEM2026. We should be able to make it as otherwise we'll have a very awkward presentation at the end.

To confirm what can now be done with the Multiviewer/Compositor:

  • Display multiple MistServer streams together into one stream
  • Add PNG images to the stream, both in the background or on top of everything.
  • Provide a live feed even if a stream has gone offline
  • Stream failover by layering a stream underneath another
  • Syncing multiple live streams to one clock
  • Live updating/changing of layout, streams and images used

As a reminder: the compositor will need to use raw video and audio streams in order to work its magic. This means an encoder will need to be used to handle both decoding and encoding, which is why we're also planning some upgrades to MistProcAV.
